Chinnamasta Devi & Her Secrets

Chinnamasta Devi & Her Secrets

India is an extraordinary country.

On the one hand you have a rural people governed by pre-historic village councils where inter-caste marriages can be punished by brutal “honor” killings.

On the other hand, you have Chinnamasta Devi severing Her own head and delighting in Her own blood while another God and Goddess enjoy sex at Her feet.

I much prefer that left hand, and think: what an India it must have been before the Muslim influence and the sexual repression started! And look at those orgies carved on the temple walls!

But that’s only on the surface.

Maybe, just maybe; we cannot blame the public thinking on the Muslims. What if the people were always as confused, constricted and conservative when it comes to sex? After all, the caste system is not a Muslim deal and sexual mores tend to be ingrained deeper than religious brainwashing.

This is not just empty speculation, there is precedence…

A study of the word “slut” and a chase for the search terms “intro to seductive reasoning” can reveal how children acquire their sexual values, as in, how no child needs to be given a definition of “what a slut is” to understand and know that “it’s bad”. All such cultural concepts are sub-communicated through body language, voice tone and inference. They reside in a level deeper than religious teaching.

An excerpt on the history of Indian sexuality suggests that things were much more relaxed back in ancient times. I have a hard time believing it. Perhaps the rulers and nobility had more refined and enlightened attitudes, but I bet that the common folk clung to tribal-instinctive expressions of sexual mores, which are still prevalent today.

From this perspective: Maybe Chinnamasta Devi offended, and perhaps even scared, most ordinary Indians. It’s just that – they couldn’t do anything about it!

I like that perspective much more. And that is some powerful magick worth looking into…

We salute Her and revel in Her beauty!
